Mass. General Ranks Fifth Among Best Hospitals List

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston has earned the No. 5 overall ranking in U.S. News & World Report magazine's Best Hospitals list.

MGH, along with two other local hospitals, is among 19 facilities to make the magazine's prestigious Honor Roll. Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston) earned the No. 8 overall ranking, and Yale-New Haven Hospital (New Haven, Conn.) earned the 19th overall ranking. Additionally, Children's Hospital Boston (CHB) received high marks in several pediatric specialties.

MGH ranked first in psychiatry, second in endocrinology, and third in neurology/neurosurgery. The hospital also ranked fourth in five specialties (orthopedics, gastrointestinal disorders, geriatric care, respiratory disorders, and heart/heart surgery). It also placed in kidney disease (fifth), rheumatology (sixth), cancer (seventh), urology (12th), gynecology (17th), and ear/nose/throat (31st). Among pediatric specialties, MGH ranked 21st in general, 16th in neonatal care, 27th in digestive disorders, and 17th in respiratory disorders.

Brigham and Women's ranked first in gynecology and kidney disorders; fifth in heart/heart surgery; seventh in rheumatology; eighth in endocrinology; 12th in gastrointestinal disorders; 14th in orthopedics and respiratory disorders; 17th in urology; 21st in neurology/neurosurgery; 22nd in geriatric care; 25th in cancer; and 35th in ear/nose/throat.

Yale-New Haven ranked sixth in geriatric care; 13th in gynecology and psychiatry; 14th in endocrinology; 19th in respiratory disorders; 21st in kidney disease; 23rd in gastrointestinal disorders; 27th in heart/heart surgery; 28th in ear/nose/throat; 29th in cancer and pediatric digestive disorders; and 32nd in neurology/neurosurgery.

Meanwhile, CHB ranked first in two pediatric specialties (digestive disorders and heart/heart surgery); second in general, cancer, and neurology/neurosurgery; third in neonatal care; and fourth in respiratory disorders.

Fourteen local hospitals earned a ranking in at least one specialty category, including Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. (43rd in endocrinology); Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston (ninth in geriatrics, 13th in endocrinology, 16th in gastrointestinal diseases, 25th in gynecology, 29th in kidney disease, 32nd in heart/heart disease, 39th in respiratory diseases, 46th in urology, 48th in ear/nose/throat, and 50th in cancer); Boston Medical Center in Boston (20th in rheumatology, 25th in respiratory disorders, and 31st in geriatrics); Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford Conn. (30th in pediatric digestive disorders); Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston (fifth in adult cancer); Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. (38th in gynecology, 39th in ear/nose/throat, and 44th in cancer); Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn. (23rd in psychiatry); Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, Conn. (41st in ear/nose/throat); Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass (22nd in urology); Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston (fifth in ear/nose/throat; and fourth in ophthalmology); McLean Hospital in Belmont, Mass. (fourth in psychiatry); New England Baptist Hospital in Boston (23rd in orthopedics); Spaulding Rehabilitation Center in Boston (seventh in rehabilitation); and Tufts Medical Center in Boston (40th in kidney disease).

Another 51 hospitals were named to the list as well.
