Teen pregnancies rose in the U.S. for the first time since 1991, according to research by the National Institutes of Health.

Although researchers said they could not determine whether the change was a blip or a trend, the number of girls ages 15 to 17 was about 21 for every 1,000 in 2005. That number rose to 22 per 1,000 in 2006.

The report also showed daily smoking among eighth-graders dipped from 4% in 2006 to 3% in 2007, a continued downward trend from 1996, when 10% of eighth-graders smoked daily, according to the NIH report "America's Children In Brief: Key National Indicators of Well-Being 2008."
