Franklin Square Hospital Center Achieves Magnet Designation
Nurses at Franklin Square Hospital Center, Baltimore, have plenty to celebrate this holiday season.
Franklin Square announced Nov. 17 that it has achieved Magnet designation for excellence in nursing services from the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet Recognition Program.
"Our nurses are truly a strength of the Square," says Larry Strassner, RN, MS, NEA-BC, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer. "But they didn't achieve this honor alone. It's the teamwork and collegial relationships of the entire hospital that together drive excellent patient quality outcomes, and the creation of a professional work environment that retains excellent staff and draws others to be part of this organization."
Out of more than 5,000 hospitals across the country, only 3% have achieved Magnet designation, which is valid for four years.
In announcing the Commission of Magnet Recognition Program's unanimous decision to grant Franklin Square Magnet designation, commission chairwoman Gail Wolf, RN, DSN, FAAN, said Magnet status is not just a nursing honor, but an award that takes support and collaboration throughout the entire hospital.
The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes healthcare organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services.
Magnet applicants undergo a rigorous evaluation process, including written documentation of 14 specific areas of nursing practice called Forces of Magnetism. Hospitals also partake in extensive interviews and an on-site review of nursing services.
"We've always been proud of the excellent work our nurses do each day and of the commitment of our entire staff to serve as a team, providing the highest quality care possible to our community," says Carl Schindelar, president of Franklin Square. "This is one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can earn and a tremendous achievement for Franklin Square."
