As Blood Sugar Levels Rise, Brain Function Falls

Patients with type 2 diabetes can suffer a drop in cognitive functioning abilities as average blood sugar levels rise, according to a study published in the journal Diabeters Care. Researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, N.C., found that a rise in average blood glucose levels over a period of two to three months caused patients' scores to drop on four cognitive tests — psychomotor speed, global cognitive function, memory, and multiple task management.

The study included nearly 3,000 patients ages 55 and above with diabetes in the U.S. and Canada.
