How Can I Find A Part-time Job That Is A Post-retirement Option And An Alternative To My Present Full-time Job?
Question:
Dear Donna,
I’ve been looking for a part-time job that would give extra income now and be a post-retirement option from my present full-time job. I am 65 and have back and knee problems. I can’t work at jobs requiring lifting or long periods on my feet. I have a BSN and an MSN experience mostly with developmentally disabled patients in group homes. Newspaper and Internet job sites have mostly bedside nursing in hospitals and home care. It is hard to find jobs in less well-known nursing fields.
Judy
Dear Donna replies:
Dear Judy,
You have several options. You just have to look in new directions for employment and use differing means to find and get those jobs. Read “Is Retirement an Ending or New Beginning?” (www.dcardillo.com/articles/retirement.html ). Because you have an MSN, contact any NCLEX review programs in your area about teaching review courses. Find these companies by doing an Internet search for “NCLEX review classes in [your home state].” Also call your local blood bank, public health department, board of education (there are sometimes positions to escort medically fragile kids to school), and local chapter of the American Red Cross. Contact some nursing agencies for some additional options. Some agencies do only traditional placement, but others have some non-traditional and part-time offerings. There are plenty of other things that meet your criteria as well. Fully explore your options by getting out to area nursing career fairs and attending my “Career Alternatives for Nurses” seminar or using the home study version www.nurse.com/ce/Career. I also recommend you read my latest book, “The ULTIMATE Career Guide for Nurses,” which has tons of advice about effectively marketing yourself at every stage of your career, finding the jobs you’re looking for, and specific advice for nurses nearing retirement.
