Question:

As part of an effort to encourage high school students to enter

healthcare fields, I have been asked to give a short presentation. Any

suggestions to entice students into nursing?

Dear Linda:

Wow! What a great opportunity to get the word out. There are many ways

to approach this. How about starting with a simple true/false

questionnaire to see how much they know about nurses. Ask them to work

on it in pairs. Use statements such as: all nurses are female; nurses

cannot write prescriptions; nurses only work in schools, hospitals and

doctors offices, etc.

Then review the questionnaire with them, giving them the right answers

and explaining a little about nurses as you go. This could be a fun,

interactive way for them to learn about who nurses are and what the

opportunities are today. You may want to visit the "Careers in Nursing"

section of this web site for some information.

You may find some books in the public library about nursing and health

careers geared to high school kids that will help you, too. Who knows,

maybe you can present this program at other schools, too, and have a

real impact on the future of our profession!

Good Luck!
