Monday March 10, 2008

Nurse practitioners provide better monitoring for patients with diabetes than physician's assistants or physicians alone, according to a study by the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, published in the January/ February issue of Annals of Family Medicine. For a full copy of the study, “Quality of diabetes care in family medicine practices: Influence of nurse practitioners and physician's assistants,” visit www.annfammed.org/cgi/content/full6/1/14.

The study found that practices employing NPs were more likely to assess hemoglobin, lipid, and urinary microalbumin levels and have patients treated for high lipid levels, compared with practices that employ physician's assistants or physicians alone. The study suggested that a team of diverse clinicians is necessary to maintain high-quality care.
