After spending a week of summer vacation learning about becoming a nurse at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, N.J., 23 high school students and their parents returned to Trinitas on Aug. 24 for a celebration and tour.
Each day during their week at camp, the students arrived at the medical center at 7:30 a.m., and spent seven hours shadowing nurses, observing patient care, visiting the OR, rounding in the ICU and ED with physicians and learning about medical principles of patient safety, infection control, emergency preparedness and medical terminology. The celebration offered parents a chance to see what their child had learned.
The camp, developed by Patricia Haydu, RN, MA, adjunct faculty of the medical center's education department, and Lisa Liss, director of volunteer services, offers high school students a chance to experience what a career in healthcare would be like. Students must be residents of Union County to be accepted.
