Question:

Dear Nancy,

Would getting a paralegal certificate help my chances of finding work as a legal nurse consultant?

Alida

Nancy Brent replies:

Dear Alida,

Any time one undertakes a profession, the more education and the more certification one has in that profession can help with obtaining a job. Certification helps in many ways; the prospective employer may see you as having advanced education and expertise above and beyond your basic education (or, perhaps, no formal education if you do not have any advanced education in this area); there is a possibility for an initial salary increase due to the certification; and there is a possibility of you having the option to open your own legal nurse consulting business in the future.

However, it is necessary to determine if there are job possibilities for legal nurse consultants where you live and/or practice. As you know, legal nurse consulting is a practice area in which many nurses are interested. Have you looked into the need for legal nurse consultants in area law firms? Have you contacted the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants at www.aalnc.org to see if they have information on job openings in your city or state?

There is little gained if one has the educational preparation and certification for a particular profession but no job within which to utilize all the training you have invested in.

Sincerely,
Nancy
