Dear Nancy,

When I was in nursing school, I had a textbook with examples of real case law concerning nurses who had been involved in all sorts of legal disputes, from employee issues to criminal issues. I can't recall the name of it and am wondering if a book of this type is still available.

Nancy Brent replies:

Dear Ione,

There are many nursing and law texts that are available today for use in nursing education programs. You did not specify what type of program you were interested in, but authors who have written these texts usually will identify the audience for whom the text is written (e.g., advanced practice students, BSN students, etc).

Your best bet is to review what comes up online for booksellers, when you enter the keywords "nursing and law texts” in the search bar. You then can review the authors, parts of the text itself (in many instances) and comments of those who have used the text as a student or read reviews by nurses.

Don't forget that nursing journals, including those that focus on specialty areas of nursing (e.g., perioperative, critical care), have articles on legal issues, sometimes focusing on actual cases.
