Dear Donna,

I am an RN and have a post-graduate degree in nursing education and administration. I am pursuing a master’s degree in psychology. My experience is three years as a staff nurse and two years as a nursing tutor. Can you tell me if it is possible for me to work abroad?

Wants to work abroad

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Wants to Work Abroad,

You don't mention where you are now or where you'd like to work. So I will assume you reside outside the U.S. and would like to work here. If that is the case, start by visiting the website www.cgfns.org, to see what is required for a nurse, educated outside of the U.S., to become licensed to work here.

Also, contact any U.S. nursing organizations associated with your country of origin, such as the National Association of Indian Nurses of America (www.nainausa.com), for additional help and support.

The U.S. nursing field is very competitive right now, and even U.S. nurses are having difficulty finding jobs in some cases and in some parts of the country.

The other thing you can do is contact an international nursing agency, one that places nurses from your country in jobs in the U.S. or whatever country in which you wish to work. Find them by asking around or doing an Internet search.

Best wishes,
