Dear Donna,

I am interested in doing insurance assessments, especially long-term care assessments. I have done these in the past through a home health agency. Do you know if there are companies that hire nurses directly?

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Interested,

There are different types of assessments done for insurance purposes, and some companies do hire RNs directly. Find the companies that provide Life Care plans by asking around, contacting insurance agents — especially those who sell long-term care insurance and by doing an Internet search. Check out the American Association of Nurse Life Care Planners (www.aanlcp.org). Also, you might contact some risk assessment and medical evaluation companies, such as PortaMedic. They usually provide the more basic insurance exams, but many provide a broad range of services to the insurance industry. Make some phone calls, do some Internet surfing and move forward.

Best wishes,
