Dear Donna,

I have heard there are opportunities through pharmaceutical companies for advanced practice nurses to earn extra income speaking at educational dinners. I have tried to investigate this opportunity, but I cannot find any information on how to register with a speaker’s bureau. Do you have any suggestions?

Dear Donna replies:

Dear APN,

This once was a very lucrative opportunity for advanced practice nurses. But the pharmaceutical companies have cut back drastically on their educational expenditures and the type of sponsored event you mention.

That being said, it still is worth contacting pharmaceutical companies about various other opportunities that might exist for you. Speak directly to anyone you know or come in contact with who works in the pharmaceutical industry in any capacity. If you don't know any such people, talk to other people, pharmacists, physicians and other APNs until you find someone who does. Mention what you are looking for specifically and express interest in learning more about other opportunities. The power of networking is people know people who know other people. This industry relies heavily on word-of-mouth for connecting with prospective employees, consultants and contract workers.

Best wishes,
