Question:

Dear Donna,

When I was in college, all I heard about were the sign-on bonuses and loan forgiveness programs for nurses. Now there's nothing out there. Other than the Health Resources and Services Administration’s programs, for which my hospital no longer qualifies, are there any nursing loan forgiveness programs?

Looking For Forgiveness

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Looking For Forgiveness,

Some states have their own loan forgiveness programs. Do an Internet search or check with your state chapter of the American Nurses Association (www.nursingworld.org) and/or the National Student Nurses Association (www.nsna.org) to see if anything exists in your area. Just for the record, sign-on bonuses and loan forgiveness programs offered by hospitals only surface when the job pool is small and job openings are large. It's all about supply and demand.

There is scholarship money available for those who go after it. Read “Master the scholarship game” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/ScholarshipGame).

Best wishes,
Donna
