Question:

Dear Donna,

I am an RN with a New York license, but I live in Israel. I would like to know if there is an online or correspondence course to become a nurse practitioner? I am 58 years old and would like to complete this degree and return to the U.S. to work. I am a gastroenterology nurse and had my certification, but was unable to renew it due to the distance. Can you help me?

Dear Donna replies:

Dear RN In Israel,

It is possible to complete your education for MSN/advanced practice nurse online. Many U.S. universities offer these programs. But, you will then need to do a clinical practicum that is arranged in various ways with each school. You'll have to contact several schools to see how this would be handled in your case.

If you plan to return to New York, I would suggest you contact the regional director and New York state representatives of Region 2 (www.aanp.org/about-aanp/regions/104-regions/546-region-2) of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners to see what your best options are for being certified as an NP in New York. Other regions can be found at www.aanp.org/about-aanp/regions. It makes sense always to talk to those already doing what you wish to do before moving forward.

Best wishes,
Donna
