Question:

Dear Donna,

I have been an LPN for 25 years, but I want a career change. I am looking into taking a course in health information technology to get an associate degree — then take a health information management course towards a bachelor’s degree. Is this a good field to get into and does it pay well?

Needs a Career Change

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Needs a Career Change,

Health information technology is a hot and growing field and a well-paying one. You would be wise to pursue this line of study, if it interests you. Another route for you may be a course or degree program in nursing informatics. To learn more about this specialty, visit the websites of the American Nursing Informatics Association (www.ania.org) and the American Medical Informatics Association (www.amia.org) — check out the nursing informatics working group there. Use the search bar at the top of these sites and enter "Informatics" — you'll see quite a variety of positions in this specialty. Related items will also come up, such as CE articles (http://search.nurse.com/?category=ce&keywords=informatics).

Best wishes,
Donna
