Dear Donna,

If I take an online medical transcription course, can I work from home and get paid well? If so, can you recommend any schools that offer these courses?

Wants to Get Paid Well

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Wants to Get Paid Well,

Unfortunately, the medical transcription business has changed dramatically in the last several years. Much of the work is now outsourced overseas, leaving fewer opportunities for nurses (and others) in this specialty in the U.S. Also, technology, including software voice recognition, has diminished the need for traditional transcription services. I would recommend you contact some medical transcription companies and/or hospitals (find them on the Internet) and inquire about opportunities before investing in any courses. See what they have to say and what they recommend. If you do take a course, try to find one specifically for nurses. Also, you can check with the Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity (www.ahdionline.org), formerly the American Association of Medical Transcription, to learn more about trends, issues and opportunities in your area.

Best wishes,
