Question:

Dear Donna,

I was reading about RN coders and auditors. Do you know if this is a growing field for nurses and where one can obtain training for such a career?

Interested in Coding

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Interested in Coding,

Coding and billing is a viable career option for nurses. But before you invest any time and money in the required coursework, talk to other nurse coders (as opposed to non-nurse coders) in your area to be sure this is what you want to do. You can find them by doing an Internet search, asking around or by referral through the American Academy of Professional Coders (www.aapc.com). Use the informational interview technique (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Interviewing) to obtain information, contacts and resources.

Related courses are offered by private education companies, adult education or continuing education divisions of local colleges, and through local chapters of AAPC and other related associations.

You might expand your research by looking into the broader field of clinical documentation specialist. This title means different things in different facilities or agencies, but you can learn more from the Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (www.hcpro.com/acdis).

Best wishes,
Donna
