Question:

Dear Donna,

I’ve been a nurse since 2005 and have experience in Puerto Rico and here in the U.S. I want hospital experience in the U.S., but it seems impossible to find a hospital position. What should I do?

Wants Experience

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Wants Experience,

You don't mention if you have current clinical experience or if you have been out of work for a time. That can make a difference, as the hospital job market in the U.S. is very tight right now and only nurses with current hospital experience are getting hired in many parts of the country.

Although you are not a new nurse, the advice and strategies in this article are applicable to any nurse looking for work, “New nurse, new job strategies” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Strategies).

Also, I recommend you read “The ULTIMATE Career Guide for Nurses: Practical Advice for Thriving at Every Stage of Your Career,” (www.Nurse.com/CE/7250) for comprehensive advice on getting hired in a very competitive job market. Nurses need to look in new directions for employment these days and need new skills to find the job they want. What worked in the past will not work moving forward.

Best wishes,
Donna
