What is the etiquette for resigning a PRN position? I am not scheduled for any shifts in the near future. I live and work in a small town and don't want to burn any bridges.

Dear Wants to Resign,

There is a right way to resign from a job and leave in good standing. It always is wise not to burn any bridges, regardless of where you live or work.

First, check your employee handbook to see what amount of notice is required based on your position and time of service. Every employer is different — it could be anywhere from one to four weeks. If you don't have such a handbook, contact human resources and ask how much notice is required.

Next, compose a letter of resignation stating your end date and saying something cordial, such as "I have enjoyed my time at (name of employer) and thank you for the opportunity." Resign in person or by phone first and then follow up with a written notice stating your end date. A copy should go to human resources and to whomever you report to (if someone other than a human resource person). Keep a copy for your records.
