Question:

Dear Donna,

I have an associate degree in nursing. I want to expand, but don't know if I should go for a BSN online or do legal nurse consulting. Any advice?

Wants to Expand

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Wants to Expand,

Furthering your formal education is something you should do, regardless of any additional career education or training you wish to pursue. A BSN is becoming a standard minimum for jobs and practice in so many different settings. It will be even more important as time goes on and who knows what the future holds for you. I always say go back to school for yourself first and your career second. Read “Go back to school and change your life” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Back-to-School). So I would definitely say go for the BSN.

Regarding legal nurse consulting, you don't need to take additional training courses to get started in this specialty. Before you do anything further, I suggest you speak to some successful LNCs. You also can get more information and many resources from the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (www.aalnc.org). Attend some local chapter meetings as a guest for now.

Best wishes,
Donna
