Question:

Dear Donna,

I am 38 years old and want to do nursing. I am a BA graduate. Why type of course should I go for at this age? What will be the course fee?

Wants to Do Nursing

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Wants to Do Nursing,

Yes, you can definitely do nursing. Because you already have BA in another major, look for an accelerated BSN program or a second-degree BSN program. Don't waste your time getting an associates degree at this point. You'll need the BSN to be fully marketable, and you're already halfway there, having previously completed a different bachelor's.

The fees will vary depending on the school, the state you're in and so on. Know there is plenty of scholarship money (and other resources) available for you. Read “Master the scholarship game” at http://www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Scholarship-Game.

Be aware that there is a waiting list of one or more years to get into many nursing programs. Any healthcare jobs you can get in the interim (including volunteer positions, if necessary) will help your chances of being admitted to nursing school. Consider working as a nurse’s aide, patient care technician, operating room technician and so on. Call local hospitals, nursing homes, home-care and hospice agencies for opportunities.
