Question:

Dear Donna,

I'm 18 years old and considering obtaining a BSN degree and becoming an RN. Also, I'm very interested in becoming a nurse practitioner in the future. I need advice on the best educational path to take to become an RN, and then eventually a nurse practitioner.

Considering Becoming an RN

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Considering Becoming an RN,

Taking steps now to enroll in a BSN program is a great way to start. During your education, including your clinical experience, you'll learn much more about nursing and healthcare in general. That will help you later to decide which direction to go with your career. Many nursing students enter school with one career path in mind and then modify that plan later on. You have plenty of time to decide that.

Here's an article you may find helpful: “Success strategies for students” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Strategies-for-Students).

Here are two websites with information about getting started in nursing: www.discovernursing.com and www.nsna.org.

Best wishes,
Donna
