Question:

Dear Donna,

I have worked for more than 10 years as a bedside nurse. I want to make a change in my career. Any advice on an alternative career in nursing for a young mother with two children?

Young Mother

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Young Mother,

You have plenty of choices depending on what your interests and background are as well as what type of schedule and work setting you want.

Some nurses who have young children find school nursing to be a good fit. They can work the same hours their kids are in school and have the same days off including vacations. You might try substitute school nursing first to see if you like it. Contact your local board of education about opportunities. You might also attend a local chapter meeting of the National Association of School Nurses (www.nasn.org) as a guest. Networking is well known to be a great way to explore options and to find a job.

Additionally, you should attend area nursing career fairs. There are often many non-traditional employers at these events as well as agencies, some of which can help place nurses in non-traditional positions of all types including school nursing jobs on occasion. See what's coming up in your area (http://www.nurse.com/events/career-fairs). Read “How to get the most out of attending a career fair” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Career-fair).

There are also a number of jobs that can be done from home such as telephone advice and case management for an insurance company or telephonic health company. You might look into those as well. For some additional tips and advice, read “How to change specialties” (www.Nurse.com/Cardillo/Change-Specialties).

Best wishes,
Donna
