White Memorial Medical Center of Los Angeles recently received the Collaborative Alliance for Nursing Outcomesí 2013 CALNOC Sustained Excellence Award for sustained excellence and for best performance in the reduction of pressure ulcers (Stage II+), according to a news release. White Memorial has been recognized for exemplary work in reducing hospital-acquired conditions for three consecutive years.

ďI feel very proud to have accepted this award on behalf of WMMC, and I would like to recognize all frontline nursing staff for their dedication and hard work in preventing, eliminating or reducing pressure ulcers and for making these awards a reality,Ē Carol Ramirez, RN, of White Memorial Medical Center. said in the release.

WMMC joined CALNOC in 2006 with the goal of utilizing the data provided as a guide to improve quality, cost and outcomes in the patient care setting. At that time, the hospitalís performance for reduction of pressure ulcers was at national average but not where hospital officials wanted it to be. Efforts were made to improve outcomes between 2006 and 2009 but did not result in
significant improvements.

Pressure ulcer improvements noted

In 2010, WMMC committed to improving patient care practices regarding pressure ulcers and the hospital administration and bedside caregivers partnered to make pressure ulcer prevention a priority, according to the release. Policies were revised and a new care process for improvement was agreed upon by a team of hospital board members, physicians, wound care nurses and specialists, educators, dieticians, medical coders and frontline staff.

Other improvements continued with Azmy Ghaly, MD, joining the skin care task force as physician champion, the development and education of the hospitalís own wound care specialist, hospital investment in the replacement of all bed mattresses, and monthly meetings by a skin care task force. Because of this hard work and dedication to best practice, the hospital showed a major reduction in pressure uclers reported in 2010, and a continued reduction over the past three years, according to the release.
