Dear Donna,

I have 11years of hospital experience, and I am burnt out. I want to do something different, but I’m not sure what. I am interested in utilization review, but I don’t know anything about it. Is there any course I can take?

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Jessy,

Start the transition process by reading the article “How to Find Your Forte” at http://www.dcardillo.com/articles/forte.html.

If there’s a particular specialty you’re interested in, such as utilization review, learn more about the specialty before taking any related courses, which likely are not necessary anyway. One of the best ways to learn more is to conduct informational interviews <http://www.dcardillo.com/articles/thescoop.html> with nurses already working in the specialty. See the article “How to Change Specialties” at http://www.dcardillo.com/articles/changespecial.html.

You should also get out to Nursing Spectrum/NurseWeek Career Fairs. Many nurses don’t realize that in addition to all the traditional job offerings at these events, there are always at least a few employers, including agencies, with nontraditional offerings. You never know what you’ll hear about at these events. Before you go, read “How to Get the Most out of Attending a Career Fair” at http://www.dcardillo.com/articles/fair.html.

It would be ideal if you could attend one of my Career Alternatives for Nurses® seminars to fully explore your options, obtain information and resources about all specialties discussed (including what you do and don’t need additional training for), and how to find and get the job you want. I’ll next be in Atlantic City, N.J., on March 10. Find out more at http://events.nursingspectrum.com/event.cfm?EID=569&type=Seminar. The program is also available in a home study version at http://www.nurse.com/CE/CD6 and http://www.nurse.com/CE/DVD1.

Good luck,
