Question:
Dear Donna,
I came from the Philippines, and I now live in California. How do I find an employer who can sponsor me? What are the requirements? How do I get several certifications?

Dear Donna replies:
Dear Carmelia,
You are fortunate that there is a large, supportive network of Philippine nurses in the U.S. I suggest that you connect with your local chapter for help, support, and advice on this in your area. Rather than trying to figure all this out on your own, contact association officers and local members. Visit the Web site of the Philippine Nurses Association of America http://www.philippinenursesaa.org. You can even get out to local chapter meetings as a guest (although you may as well join). This is also a great way to make new friends and meet colleagues in the area. And networking is a great way to find and get a job under any circumstances.
Donna Cardillo, RN, MA, well-known career guru, is Nursing Spectrum/NurseWeek’s “Dear Donna” and author of Your First Year as a Nurse: Making the Transition from Total Novice to Successful Professional and The ULTIMATE Career Guide for Nurses: Practical Advice for Thriving at Every Stage of Your Career.
