Nurses Help Operation Walk Take First Steps

Maryland Group Helps Joint Replacement Patients in Peru

Nurses from four Maryland hospitals helped coordinate and participate in the inaugural medical mission of Operation Walk Maryland, a nonprofit volunteer medical organization that provides free hip and knee replacements to impoverished patients.

In October, the group took its first mission, to Lima, Peru. Along with joint replacements, nurses and others in the group educated local healthcare professionals in the most advanced treatments for debilitating joint disease.

Nurses who took part in the project were Mary Humenuik-Smith, RN, Suzanne Bonner, RN, Karen Kansler, RN, Joanna Stuart, RN, Margaret Ratcliffe, RN, Dotsie Czajkowski, CRNP, and Meredith Pattin, RN, of Good Samaritan Hospital, Baltimore; Allene Yelle, RN, and Marshelle Morlock, RN, Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore; Maria Khanuja, RN, Bill Sweet, RN, and Shruti Thomas, RN, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore; and Vivian Brioso-Wallace, RN, Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore.

The group of healthcare professionals accomplished 48 joint replacements in 3 1/2 surgical days. The group also dedicated its time to patient recovery and physical therapy.

The group has begun planning for a November 2009 trip to Ecuador.
