Congressman John Shimkus (R-Ill.) has secured funding by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The $24,465 grant will be used for Nurse Anesthetist Traineeships. The federal program supports traineeships for licensed RNs enrolled as full-time students beyond 12 months of study in a master’s nurse anesthesia program.

“The training of nurse anesthetists and many other healthcare fields of study is very important to our region and our nation,” Shimkus said in a news release. “In these uncertain economic times, healthcare workers are still in demand.”

SIUE School of Nursing Dean Marcia Maurer added the traineeship program is expensive. The grant will allow financially strapped students to continue their educations. The grant is through a competitive program and continues federal support for SIUE’s Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist program.
