A total of 19 community health centers in the state of Indiana will receive nearly $5 million in funds from the federal stimulus package.

According to a report on IndyStar.com, four centers in Indianapolis will use the funds to hire new staff and expand hours. Many of the facilities that will receive the federal money serve the uninsured and underinsured. Many Americans who have lost jobs and private insurance are turning to the health centers for care.

The IndyStar.com story said state officials believe the federal funds will provide 39,175 patients in Indiana care during the next two years.

A grant of more than $620,000 will be used by Indianapolis-based Indiana Health Centers toward a new facility in Peru, a town in north central Indiana.
