Hospital officials are confident the Diamond Children’s Medical Center, which opens in Tucson, Ariz., at University Medical Center in summer 2010, will provide great economic benefits for the region.

Additional medical and surgical sub-specialists will be recruited to Tucson to provide services that once only were available in Phoenix or other states, according to a news release. These include pediatric neurosurgery and urology, among others.

“We’ll also be recruiting for additional staff such as pediatric nurses, anesthesiologists, radiologists, pathologists and pediatric emergency physicians to name a few,” Vicki Began, RN, vice president for Women and Children’s Services at UMC, said in a news release.

Although no data exists about the specific economic impact of Diamond Children’s, results from other children’s hospitals connected to academic institutions such as Boston Children’s (Harvard) and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (Stanford), indicate a positive impact in employment, community services, support of local business, and tax revenue, according to a news release.
