A new service at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark, N.J., has been designed to help heal advanced wounds that are difficult to treat. The Advanced Wound Care and Hyperbaric Institute provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date wound care available, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy wound management to enhance the natural healing of chronic wounds from diabetes, poor circulation, or vascular disease.

Nurses trained in wound care management perform procedures to assist with wound healing. They may apply a mist machine for gentle wound cleansing debridement after misonix therapy is used to cut away necrotic tissue; pulse lavage, a high-pressurized normal saline cleansing that vacuums off debris; and light and electric stimulation therapies to help with actual healing of wounds and the stimulation of new tissue growth.

Nurses obtain complete medical histories and provide patient education on wound prevention, nutrition, application of vacuum-assisted wound closure, or wound VAC, and how to change dressings at home and post-treatment discharge planning.

For more information, call the institute at 973-926-8231.
