I am an RN and am starting my own CPR training business. I plan to have the following statement on my Web site as well as making this announcement at the start of each class: “Classes involve strenuous physical activity and close contact with other class members. Please notify the instructor prior to the class if you have physical limitations requiring accommodation. Reschedule to another class date if you have signs of an infection.”
Is there a need for professional liability insurance in case someone is injured during a class? All classes will be held at the customer’s business or home.

Congratulations on deciding to start your own business. Being a nurse entrepreneur is exciting, and with proper planning, your business should be successful. To that end, you may want to connect with the National Nurses in Business Association Inc. Its Web site is www.nnba.net.
In addition to connecting with the NNBA, you should consider hiring a nurse attorney or attorney in your state who works with healthcare entreprenuers. He or she will be able to provide you with the information you will need to consider as you plan this business and advise you of what state laws apply to you and help you comply with them. The attorney also can evaluate your question concerning professional liability insurance.
Another resource will be a professional liability insurance carrier. The insurance carrier can help you identify and determine what insurance you will need over and above professional liability insurance, if the latter is necessary. As an example, if you have employees or independent contractors who will be providing the CPR training for your business, an insurance carrier can help you identify what type(s) of insurance you need in the event the employee is involved in an injury or is injured while working for you.
Sincerely,
Nancy
