The roundtable meeting was facilitated by the myriad departments in attendance, but a common discussion point was appreciation of PIH’s support — for the staff as well as for the patients. Several nurses noted the importance of staff support from the top down, and cited examples.
One nurse spoke about the comfort she received after recently suffering a heart attack. She said she was grateful to the organization after receiving cards and prayers from her colleagues. She noted the leadership and management created a welcoming atmosphere that translated down to the staff.
Another nurse commented on the perioperative 1-on-1 program, which gives employees the opportunity to train and use nine months to get the theory in the classroom and then hands-on experience. She said this contributed to providing a good foundation in OR.
Continuing education for the staff also was appreciated by a nurse who was awarded scholarships to further her education. She said PIH was supportive in scheduling around her classes. This clinical ladder opportunity is available for nurses to advance and give back to the unit, which she described as a “win-win” situation. PIH’s preceptor program, as well as its dropped mortality rate from 38% to 7% in the ICU, also were hailed by the nursing staff.
