Carroll Hospital Center RN Named to Maryland Council

Leslie Simmons, RN, BSN, MA, chief operating officer and senior vice president of patient care services at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, Md., was appointed April 24 to the Maryland Health Quality and Cost Council.

The appointment was made by John Colmers, secretary of the state’s department of health and mental hygiene.

Patricia Wagman, RN, BSN, CDE, was honored May 7 as Carroll’s Registered Nurse of the Year during its Best of the Best Awards dinner in honor of National Nurses Week.

Saint Agnes Hospital, Baltimore
Jenny Siebenhaar, RN, inpatient oncology unit, has been named the hospital’s 2009 Nurse of the Year. Siebenhaar was chosen from among 28 nominees. Karen Bergman, RN, MSN, has been promoted to nurse manager for the operating room. Constance O’Connell, RN, has taken over as nurse manager for 6North, a med/surg unit.

Potomac Hospital, Woodbridge, Va.
Ellen Walker, RN, endoscopy, and Kerry Ryskamp, RN, emergency care center, were among 10 employees recognized by hospital officials for receiving the most positive feedback on visitor and patient recognition forms.

Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore
RNs Christine Brown, Kristen Chavis, and Mary Rossbach were honored May 7 at the annual Nursing Awards Reception.

Brown, who works on the 11th floor/ICU, was awarded the Sister Damian Faller Nurse Visionary Award. A nurse on the 15th floor Mother/Baby unit, Chavis was named the winner of the Sister Mary Thomas Nurse Leadership honor.




Gina Tamberino, RN

Rossbach, a PACU nurse, received the Sister Thecla Lancaster Compassionate Caregiver Award. Beth Kilmoyer, RN-BC, MS, was given the People’s Choice Award for her poster presentation, “Raising the Stakes in Medication Administration Safety: Sustainability of a Barcode Medication Administration System,” at the American Nursing Informatics Association Capital Area Roundtable on Informatics in Nursing conference in April in Las Vegas.

The team of Karen S. Kesten, APRN, DNP, CCRN, PCCN, CCNS, assistant professor and program director fo the acute care NP and acute and critical care CNS programs; Linda Briggs, ACNP, MSN, adjunct assistant professor; Helen Brown, ACNP, MS, FNP, adjunct instructor; and Stephen Hurst, director of medical technologies, co-authored a chapter about simulation in acute care advanced practice nursing in the new book, “High-Fidelity Patient Simulation in Nursing Education.”

Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Md.
Cathy Copertino, RN, MS, OCN, executive director of the AAMC Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute, has been appointed to the Maryland State Council on Cancer Control by Gov. Martin O’Malley.

Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md.
Ann Turner, RN, MSN, CCRN, was named Employee of the Year at a May banquet. Turner, a critical care clinical specialist, educator, and nurse, has 27 years of service at Peninsula.

The facility honored more than 100 board-certified nurses with a breakfast and afternoon dessert Mrch 19 in honor of Certified Nurses Day. Managers, directors, and the executive team greeted the nurses and presented them with corsages.

Nurses also were given the opportunity to revise their identification badges to reflect their certification status.

Union Hospital, Elkton, Md.
Amanda Klockars-McMullen, RN, MSN, CNS, has been promoted to nurse manager of the maternal child health department.

Klockars-McMullen has been employed since August 2008 as the hospital’s first specialty-based clinical nurse specialist. She is a PhD in nursing candidate at Villanova University.

St. Joseph Medical Center, Towson, Md.
Jen Lieu, RN, NP, heart failure specialist with The Heart Institute, has been named the 2009 Spirit of St. Francis Employee of the Year.

Gina Tamberino, RN, CNOR, has been named clinical manager of the operating room. Her responsibilities will include the cardiac ORs and general ORs.

Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, Baltimore
Instructor Rosemary Mortimer, RN, MSN, MEd, received the 2009 National Student Nurses Association Leader of Leaders Award at the NSNA’s annual convention April 15-19 in Nashville, Tenn.

Mortimer was nominated by students Amy Hoffman, Gyasi Moscou-Jackson, Kellyn Hickey, Jessica Hancock, Katherine Woodward, and Darcie Stem.




Jenny Siebenhaar, RN

Assistant professor Sara Groves, RN, DrPH, MPH, MS, CS, recently traveled to Uganda to facilitate needs assessments and assist in teaching public health nursing at the Makerere University department of nursing.

Assistant professor Jennifer Wenzel, RN, PhD, CCM, has been awarded a $729,000 Mentored Research Scholar Grant by the American Cancer Society to help rural black elders obtain quality cancer care.

Professor Phyllis Sharps, RN, PhD, FAAN, chair of the department of community public health, has been named to an Institute of Medicine committee that will study “Qualifications of Professionals Providing Mental Health Counseling Services under TRICARE.”

National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners
Kristin S. McHarg, CPNP, MSN, of Fairfax Station, Va., was honored at the NAPNAP annual conference in April in San Diego with the AFPNP 2009 Outstanding PNP Preceptor Award.

Linda Murray, CPNP, MSN, of Annapolis, Md., was awarded one of six Nurse in Washington Internships. Kara Franz of Baltimore was awarded the Elaine Gelman Scholarship.
