The March of Dimes Maryland National Capital Area Chapter has awarded an $18,000 grant to the Best Beginnings program at Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster, Md.

The program, which is a collaboration between the hospital, Carroll County’s health department, and local obstetricians, offers healthcare to low-income, uninsured, and underserved pregnant women.

The grant will be used for education and care for pregnant Latino women and will offer bilingual support, outreach activities, and transportation.

The diabetes self-management education program at Carroll has been awarded an Education Recognition Certificate by the American Diabetes Association in honor of its excellence and ability to offer patients high-quality education.

To achieve the honor, the program’s nurses and staff members were evaluated to determine their proficiency and knowledge in providing diabetes management information.

“The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide,” said Susan Steinweg, RN, BSN, CDE, coordinator of Carroll’s diabetes center.
