Broward Health’s Comprehensive Cancer Center at Broward General Medical Center received the 2008 Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons. Only 93 programs across the U.S. earned this distinction in 2008. Broward General, which first received the recognition in 2005, was the first program in Florida to receive this award.

The CoC award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the award following a rigorous on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a high level of compliance with standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program (cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement).

Broward General’s Comprehensive Cancer Center received a perfect score on all of the nine eligible standards for commendation, along with full compliance on the remaining standards evaluated. Only three hospitals in Florida received nine commendations. Broward General was the only facility in Broward County to earn this distinction.
