Houston Northwest Medical Center’s Esther Valdez, RN, was recognized as a Healthcare Hero at the Houston Business Journal’s first Health Care Heroes awards luncheon. There were 12 healthcare hero categories. Valdez won the Healthcare Hero Nurse award.

“I was profoundly honored to be chosen for the Houston Business Journal’s HealthCare Hero Nurse Award,” Valdez, a breast center mammocare specialist at Houston Northwest, said in a news release. “I was emotionally moved to be in a room filled with so many individuals who shared my passion.”

Valdez had worked as a nurse for 35 years, the last of which she has spent working with patients at the breast center. Valdez has increased membership in “Care, Share, and Be Aware,” the breast cancer survivors support group at Houston Northwest. She also has reached out to the Hispanic community in Houston to teach about the importance of getting mammograms and performing monthly self-exams.
