Catherine Colao, RN
A team player with a cheerful demeanor, Catherine Colao, RN, a nurse at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., received the hospital’s annual 2009 Excellence in Caring Award.
Colao has worked on the 42-bed behavioral rehabilitation unit for nearly 10 years. The unit provides a 21-day inpatient rehabilitation program for adult patients who have a dual diagnosis of mental illness combined with chemical addiction.
“I am extremely honored to receive this award, especially since I think all of the nurses at Phelps deliver outstanding patient care,” Colao said in a news release. Before her position at Phelps, Colao was a nurse at Stony Lodge Hospital, a child and adolescent psychiatric hospital in Ossining, N.Y., where she worked with mentally ill adolescents in crisis.
“Cathy is a great team worker who goes above and beyond to help patients feel comfortable and safe,” Barbara Schaut, RN, Phelps nursing service administration coordinator, said at the awards presentation. “She is unfailing in her caring and cheerful behavior with patients and always takes the extra steps necessary to understand their needs, both emotional and physical, to ensure quality care.”
