The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning healthcare professionals about instances in which pieces of tissue have remained within arthroscopic shavers, a device used in orthopedic surgical procedures, even after the cleaning process has been completed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Since retained tissue in these devices can compromise the entire sterilization process, the FDA is working with the manufacturers to gather more data and to understand the potential effect on public health. The FDA encourages facilities that use any of these types of devices to evaluate the adequacy of their cleaning procedures.
