The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services announced Aug. 12 that it has
made $13.4 million in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
for load repayments to nurses who agree to practice in facilities with
critical shortages and for nursing schools to provide loads to students to
become nurse faculty.

“The need for more nurses is great,” said Bill Corr, HHS deputy secretary,
in a news release. “These two programs will help us meet projected demand
for their services.”

A total of $8.1 million from the Nurse Education Loan Program was made
available, along with $5.3 million under the Nurse Faculty Loan Program. The
NLERP funds will be awarded competitively and help 100 RNs pay nursing
education debts.

The NFLP funds will help train 500 master’s and doctoral nursing students to
become nurse faculty members.
