Named after the late Richard P. Biondi, who was a senior vice president of White Plains Hospital Center and was instrumental in leading fundraising initiatives on its behalf, the nurse apprentice program is coordinated by Annie Norris, MS, and Monica Purdy, RN, MA, who direct the community outreach program at local schools and screen, select, evaluate, and oversee the apprentices.
During the full-time, five-days-per-week schedule, the apprentices worked on speciality units, such as pediatrics, ED, endoscopy, post-anesthesia care, ICU step-down, labor and delivery, maternal-child, medical-surgical, oncology, and neonatal intensive care. They also performed supervised tasks, such as answering call bells, taking vital signs, assisting patients with meals, assisting nurses as needed, and sitting with patients. The students also receive presentations from members of the nursing staff on different topics, such as patient safety, hygiene, and medication.
The apprentices who graduated this summer include Michelle Aguilar, SUNY Cobbleskill; Andrew Aurellano, Stepinac High School; Roslyn Baldevieso, Lehman College; Samantha DeLuca, Maria Regina High School; Miranda DeNardo, Westchester Community College; Leonela Espinal, Quinnipiac University; Jackie Flooks, Pace University; Nick Forlini, Stepinac High School; Alexa Greto, The College of New Rochelle; Danielle Gulle, Westchester Community College; Lakeisha Hall, White Plains High School; Guadalupe Hernandez, Westchester Community College; Vinny Jacopino, Westchester Community College; Toni LaMonica, Buffalo University; Casey Lorusso, Ridgefield High School; Tricia Liller, Penn State University; Maya Lloyd, Stony Brook University; Immaculata Obi, Utica College; Angelica Rivera, White Plains High School; Amanda Rush, Quinnipiac University; Alexa Sullivan, Mount St. Mary College; and Elizabeth Villacres, Hunter College.
Since the program was launched in 2006, seven former apprentices have begun to work toward BSNs. The nursing students are attending three different colleges. The following former apprentices are attending The College of New Rochelle: Maria Becerra, Candace Foster, Diana Franco, Nathalie Gonzalez, and Anesha Hines. Kelly Longworth is studying at The University of Rhode Island, and Patty Swayne is enrolled in Adelphi University.
