On July 30, Lehigh Valley distributed burn care carts to 27 hospitals and mobile surge facilities in northeastern Pennsylvania to care for patients in the event of a plane crash, large-scale fire, chemical exposure, or other disaster.
“Everything needed to initiate burn care is available on the carts,” said Patrick Pagella, RN, Lehigh Valley Health Network’s burn program coordinator. “They are a valuable resource for disaster preparedness.”
Each cart contains Anticoat, an antibacterial dressing that needs to be applied only once in a 72-hour period, along with supplies to administer IV fluids, equipment to maintain a patient’s airway, nurses and gloves for caregivers, and various other items.
The grant was made available through the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Office of Public Health Preparedness. Donations from EMS of Northeastern Pennsylvania also helped stock the carts, which were designed and constructed by Lehigh Valley Regional Burn Center staff members.
