Maryland event raises $500,000 for Campaign for Nursing’s Future

Johnson & Johnson, in partnership with Nursing Spectrum and Gannett Healthcare Group, delivered on its promise to Maryland nurses by raising more than $500,000 at the Promise of Nursing for Maryland gala Sept. 24 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront.

As part of its Campaign for Nursing’s Future, J&J sponsored the entire event, with 100 percent of the funds raised are planned for regional undergraduate student scholarships, faculty fellowships, and nursing school grants to help ease the nursing shortage in Maryland.

J&J provided a showcase for nurses to shine. Sparkling smiles and attire adorned the nurse attendees, who were representing facilities and organizations throughout Maryland at the fundraising celebration.

During a pre-dinner reception, Gannett Healthcare Group, publisher of Nursing Spectrum and NurseWeek, proudly displayed its authentic letters hand-written by Florence Nightingale in 1861. The historic letters were purchased by GHG in 2009 from a private collection.

As guests dined, they were treated to J&J-produced videos about nurses and their effect on patients that were displayed on giant screens on either side of the stage.

Nurses came on stage afterward and inspired the crowd as they eloquently recounted their experiences.

The nurse speakers included the following:

• Kenya Haney delivered the invocation. She is the president of the National Student Nurses Association and a student at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

• Hershaw Davis Jr., a student from the University of Maryland School of Nursing, described his desire to teach future generations of nurses.

• Jessica Hay, a nurse from Greater Baltimore Medical Center, told of her wrenching, and often futile, experiences trying to save victims of Hurricane Katrina.

• Maryann Bautista, a nurse from the University of Maryland Medical Center, described how she came to the U.S. from the Philippines to fulfill her nursing dreams.

• Marian Grant, a nurse from Johns Hopkins, recounted her journey from her first career as a Cover Girl executive to her second career as a palliative care nurse.

At the end of the gala, seven amateur videos were shown as part of a contest.

Nurses from local facilities submitted videos before the gala for J&J’s short video competition, the Promise of Nursing Video Challenge.

Sometimes poignant, often humorous and entertaining, the videos showed nurses singing, dancing, or creatively performing as they went about their day.

The winner, judged by audience applause, was produced by the University of Maryland Medical Center’s radiology nurses.

The video, called “Day in the Life of a Radiology Nurse,” included a crowd-pleasing fashion show. With Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” playing in the background, the nurses sashayed by the camera in their everyday nursing garb, covered head to toe in shapeless scrubs, booties, lead aprons, colorful gloves, surgical masks, and scrub hats.

The finalists in the video contest included the following:

• “Our Nurses Promise” — Greater Baltimore Medical Center

• “3D - Where WE Monitor More Than Your Heart” — University of Maryland Medical Center

• “Who Will Care?” — MedStar Health/Harbor Health

• “AACC Hand Dancers” — Anne Arundel Community College

• “Good Morning Nursing School” — University of Maryland School of Nursing

• “The Bedpan Saga” — LifeBridge Health/Sinai Hospital
