Question:

Dear Donna,

How can I apply to a hospital RN program? I got my NCLEX license in August. I am looking for a job in the Los Angeles area, but the hiring of RNs appears to be at a standstill.

Lara

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Lara,

Even though the job market is tight, there are jobs out there. You have to look in new directions for employment and need to utilize different methods to find and get those jobs. Read “New Nurse, New Job Strategies” at www.dcardillo.com/articles/newnurse.html and “The RN Job Squeeze” at http://news.nurse.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2009310050036. Take the advice in both articles.

Take anything in nursing you can find right now – even if it’s part time. You can continue to look while you work. Also, volunteer somewhere medical while you look for paid work. Persistence and determination always win out in the end.

My best wishes,
Donna
