I have been out of hospital floor nursing for 10 years, but I’d like to go back to it part-time. Will I need a refresher course to get back in?

Question:

Dear Donna,

For the last 10 years, I have been doing disease management and utilization review and am considering working part-time in a hospital as a floor nurse. Will I need to take a refresher course? If so, where would I do that and how long would it take?

Jackie

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Jackie,

You will most likely need to take a refresher course if you decide to pursue bedside hospital positions. Read “Reentering the Workforce” at www.dcardillo.com/articles/reenterwork.html. Even though you are in the workforce, the article addresses the questions you ask.

Understand the job market is very tight for nurses in many parts of the country. Before moving forward, I would suggest you make some preliminary calls to nurse recruiters or human resource professionals in area hospitals. You might also attend some local nursing career fairs to see what the opportunities are in your geographic area and what type of advice and feedback you get from recruiters about what it would take for them to consider you for a bedside position. Best wishes,
