I have been an LPN for 20 years and would love to get into infusion therapy. But I’m learning you have to be an RN to work in this specialty. Is this correct?
Robin
Many infusion therapy positions require an RN license because of scope of practice issues related to IV medication administration. However, according to Nancy Brent, RN, JD, of Brent’s Law, "Some states do allow LPNs expanded role responsibilities after completing an approved course in role expansion. An example is the LPNs' ability to provide some aspects of infusion therapy under certain circumstances with specified oversight." Read the full post at http://news.nurse.com/article/20090605/ALL05/90605003/-1/section. I also suggest you contact the Infusion Nurses Society (www.ins1.org) for additional information and resources related to this specialty, including your state regulations/opportunities.
Best wishes,
Donna
