To promote World Diabetes Day, California’s state Capitol building in Sacramento will be lit in blue Nov. 14, with the help of area nurses.
A circle of attendees holding blue glow sticks will form on the Capitol steps to create a united vision for diabetes awareness. Also during the event, a health fair will feature information about healthy living, diabetes prevention, and diabetes care.
The lighting begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the blue circle at 6 p.m. Featured speakers include UCSF Professor of Medicine Dean Schillinger, basketball player Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings, and a diabetes youth advocate.

A Simple Plan
Studies have shown that patients diagnosed with pre-diabetes can prolong the prevention of type 2 diabetes by following guidelines set out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They include:
• Be physically active at least 30 minutes, five times a week.
• Make healthy food choices.
• Drink less sugar-sweetened beverages.
• Lose 5% to 7% of body weight if needed.
• See a healthcare provider on a regular basis.
