Kaiser Permanente has opened a $390 million, 680,000-square-foot facility in Downey, Calif., that boasts several design features aimed at enhancing patient healing, according to a news release.

The project replaces the 44-year-old Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center. Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center features larger ORs, a full-service ED, 18 private birthing and recovery suites, and a 49-bed neonatal intensive care unit, according to the release. More than 95% of the 352 beds in the new facility will be in “family friendly” private rooms, which house a pull-out couch for overnight guests and a refrigerator.

The hospital includes several environmentally-friendly design features to enhance the patient experience, including large windows to allow for an abundance of natural light, a no-recirculation air system and nontoxic paint. The hospital also has implemented a comprehensive electronic health record system.
