LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Karen B. Haller, RN, PhD, FAAN, vice president, nursing and patient care services at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore was honored Oct. 1 as the winner of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s President’s Award at the organization’s 13th Magnet Conference, “Inspiring Innovation, Achieving Outcomes.”

“When you’re working for excellence, it doesn’t feel like work,” Haller said as she accepted the award during the opening session of the conference.

The award recognizes exceptional leaders who have partnered with ANCC’s president to advance the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the organization.

Haller has been a longtime supporter of both the ANCC and the American Nurses Assocation.

Reflecting on her pioneering efforts in recognizing powerful cultural changes brought about by the Magnet journey, Haller has said, “I bet the farm when I convinced the hospital leadership to support the journey when relatively little was known about the program, and I’m happy to say that the investment paid off many times over.”

In a statement about the award, ANCC thanked Haller for sharing her wisdom on several fronts. Currently, Haller sits on ANCC’s research council and chairs the organization-wide audit committee. She is also playing a major role in launching a Magnet multisite research study on improving heart failure outcomes.

Haller, the 10th vice president for nursing in the hospital’s history, began working at Johns Hopkins in 1988 as director of nursing for research and education.

ANCC’s 14th National Magnet Conference is planned for Oct. 13-15, 2010 in Phoenix.

Judith S. Mitiguy, RN, MS, is Executive Vice President, Nursing Communications & Initiatives, for Gannett Healthcare Group.
